Two women have written a letter of apology to Woolworths after they were busted stealing $355 worth of groceries from the Maryborough store.

Laikin Emily Judith Bond pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrates Court to possessing dangerous drugs, possessing drug utensils, disqualified driving and stealing.

The court heard on April 6 a blue Hyundai i30 was seen by police, driven by Bond.

Checks revealed she was disqualified from driving when she faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on June 7, 2022.

She told police she knew she was disqualified but she had driven that day to get fuel.

During the incident, police formed the suspicion that she may be in possession of dangerous drugs.

A search of her handbag uncovered a grinder used to grind cannabis.

A small clipseal bag containing 1.39 grams of cannabis was also found, the court heard.

In a separate incident on June 16, Bond and her co-accused went to Maryborough’s Woolworths supermarket.

The women paid for a smaller amount of items, but did not pay for a large amount of items remaining in a trolley, the court was told.

The women were spoken to by staff and asked to provide proof of purchase for the items in the trolley.

The trolley was pushed past the staff members and out of the store, failing to pay for the items.

Police were called and the trolley and the defendants were found in the carpark of the business.

The officers asked to see a receipt and were given a receipt that was “not consistent” with the large number of items, the court heard.

About $355 worth of groceries had been stolen, the court heard, but the items were recovered.

At the time, Bond was on probation for dishonesty offending, the court was told.

Duty lawyer Morgan Harris said a letter had been written by the two women to Woolworths, apologising for the incident.

Bond had two young children, he said, and she had previously worked in admin and reception positions.

She was currently receiving the single parent payment from Centrelink, Mr Harris said.

Bond had escaped from a violent relationship earlier in the year but was now in a loving and supportive relationship with a new partner, he said.

She was working to get her life back on track after being diagnosed with post-natal depression, Mr Harris said.

Bond was fined $1700 and was disqualified from driving for three years.

Convictions were recorded.

Her co-accused in the stealing offence, Jacqueline Katina Catherine Martin is not a stranger to the court.

Earlier this year Martin was sentenced to jail after being caught with meth on one occasion and goods that had been stolen from a local IGA.

For the most recent offences she pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrates Court to two counts of using false number plates, and two counts of operating a motor during a number plate confiscation period, along with three counts of fraud, stealing and breaching her bail conditions.

Mr Harris said Martin was employed in a landscaping business and refurbishing antiques.

She was fined $500 and ordered to complete 70 hours of community service.

Convictions were recorded.
