Father in court for sexually abusing daughter

A Fraser Coast tradesman who sexually abused his daughter has been sentenced to jail.

A father has been sentenced to 4 years prison for abusing his daughter.

A Hervey Bay man who sexually abused his own daughter was jailed on Friday.

The man who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay District Court to multiple charges, including maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child and four counts of sexual assault.

The court heard the abuse occurred “two to three times a week” and began in 2017.

Authorities were first notified by a schoolteacher of the victim who told of the abuse taking place.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Francis told the court despite the victim telling her father “I do not like it, why are you doing it” the abuse continued for 11 months.

The defendant’s defence lawyer said while the father was “responsible for the effect the abuse had on her” he was “less so” for the isolation she had with the family. He also said his client was a “highly qualified tradesman” who “cannot explain his conduct”.

Judge Glen Cash said the father had “betrayed” the trust given from children to parents and had ordered the victim to “obey him”.

The father was sentenced to four years jail, suspended after 12 months with an operational period of five years.
