Police are investigating after man allegedly fled fatal crash at River Heads

A driver has been charged with dangerous driving after allegedly hitting an elderly man on a mobility scooter near Hervey Bay then fleeing the scene.

A driver who allegedly caused a fatal crash in River Heads has been released on bail.

A spokeswoman from Queensland Police said the 25-year-old had been allowed bail “under strict conditions”.

The driver is due face court in December after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash in which an elderly man was struck and killed while riding a mobility scooter in River Heads on Friday.

The police will allege the male 25-year-old driver of a green wagon struck the 84-year-old man on Ariadne Street about 2.30pm and then fled the scene with the damaged vehicle.

The elderly man riding the mobility scooter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested the driver, a Pialba man, three hours later following an exhaustive search.

The driver been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, fail to remain at scene with callous disregard and drive unlicensed and is due to appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on December 16.

The Forensic Crash Unit is calling for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the green sedan, to contact police.
