New Maryborough prison officers celebrate graduation

Prison officers will start work in the Maryborough prison after a ceremony that also recognised more long-term corrections staff. See the photos.

A ceremony has been held at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough as 15 new custodial correctional officers celebrated graduating their 10-week course.

Joined by family and friends, 15 new custodial correctional officers were inducted and recognised for their achievements at a ceremony at Maryborough’s Brolga Theatre on Wednesday.

The new prison guards will join the frontline at Maryborough Correctional Centre in coming days.

In order to graduate, the new officers completed a 10-week paid custodial officer entry program.

At the ceremony on April 19, six officers with 90 years of experience between them were recognised with the National Medal and Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.

Queensland Corrective Services is actively recruiting with many career paths on offer at the top tier public safety agency, including CCOs, trade instructors, dog squad officers, psychologists, counsellors, cultural liaison officers and administrative roles, all of which play a vital role in managing and rehabilitating prisoners to keep communities safe.

MP Nikki Boyd, representing the Minister for Corrective Services, and Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders attended the ceremony to congratulate the new graduates.

“Congratulations to our newest and experienced correctional officers for their commitment and service to frontline public safety,” Mr Saunders said.

“Queensland Corrective Services is an essential part of our criminal justice system, delivering innovative, effective, evidence-based correctional services, which contribute to a safer Queensland.

“Together with the community, we are incredibly proud of the work officers do and their dedication and commitment to their role in keeping the public safe.”

Central and Northern Region Command QCS assistant commissioner Eloise Hamlett acknowledged the officers for their commitment and service.

“Our officers are equipped with the highest level of training, skills and support to enable them to perform their roles safely and effectively,” she said.

“Every interaction our officers have is an opportunity to address offending behaviour and to improve the vocational and life skills of prisoners, assisting in their rehabilitation and reintegration back into the community.”
