Electricians, boilermakers and trade assistants are just some of the new jobs up for grabs for the reopening of the Maryborough Sugar Mill.
Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders said there were 45 jobs on offer, and at full production, the reopening of the mill would generate more than 80 jobs.
Advanced Energy Group was in talks with MSF Sugar to purchase the mill for the purpose of creating a bio-energy hub.
Now the purchase has been finalised, the recommissioning process has started to prepare the factory for the 2023 cane crush.
It comes after the region’s canegrowers were forced to transport cane to the Isis Sugar Mill while the Maryborough Mill was closed for 18 months.
Jobs up for grabs include work execution superintendents (workshop and fabrication), boilermakers, fitters, electricians, trade assistants and shift supervisors.
An electrical supervisor, purchasing officer, maintenance planner, reliability engineer and safety advisor are more positions being advertised.
The sale of the Maryborough Mill comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s visit to Torbanlea in August 2022 to turn sod on the site that will become a $239 million factory that will generate another 800 jobs in the region.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles also visited the region in July 2022 to announce that Maryborough would be home to Australia’s first, large-scale iron flow battery manufacturing factory.
In July, AEG said in a statement that purchasing the Maryborough Sugar Mill for the purchase of creating a bio-energy hub would strengthen investment into farming practices and bring back jobs.
“AEG have identified that greater opportunity exists to deliver continuous growth and value within the sugar industry and that is to diversify the capabilities of the mill,” a statement said.
“In basic form this means also assigning the mill for alternate energy production in using all of the cane material as well as the implementation of new energy cane varieties.
“The purchase only seeks to further benefit the growers for the long term giving security to the 126 year legacy that presides.”
Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders had previously told The Chronicle that getting a company like AEG investing in the city was “brilliant” as it meant “jobs for locals”.
“It’s great for our city – I’m so happy,” he said.
