A memo telling Maryborough Station Square Shopping Centre employees their cars will be towed because they are “stopping shoppers from parking” has been shared to social media.
The memo follows the closure of part of the centre’s car park as construction work is carried out on new developments, including the city’s first 7-Eleven outlet.
The entry to the centre from Ferry St has been closed for weeks, causing traffic issues and leading to a shortage of parking.
The Chronicle understands 150 car parks are currently unavailable due to the construction work.
In addition to that, with Woolworths operating in a limited capacity after being inundated by floodwaters in February, more customers have been shopping at Coles to buy groceries.
On Friday, Jessica Raines posted the memo to social media, where it elicited dozens of comments.
It was sent to staff by centre manager Doug Sanderson.
“Due to the lack of employee’s attention to my memos about parking in the car park, I am employing a tow truck to be on site to remove any works’ vehicle,” the memo read.
“The fact that I have to resort to this action is so disappointing as you are stopping shoppers from parking to shop in the centre.
“Retrieval will be at owners’ expense.”
Ms Raines said on behalf of all staff, she was asking for help to fight this.
She said there were two small car parks for employees at the centre, totalling about 50 spaces, which would not cover a third of the staff employed at the centre.
The Chronicle contacted Mr Sanderson, who declined to comment.
