Police are speaking with a 20-year-old Tinana man in the wake of an alleged assault outside a Maryborough pub which left a 51-year-old man fighting for his life.

Emergency services were called to the scene outside the Lamington Hotel on Friday.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the alleged assault as a coward punch.

In a media statement on Saturday, police said initial investigations showed a fight broke out between the two men outside the Ferry St pub about 10pm.

Police allege the younger man struck the 51-year-old Maryborough man in the head, causing him to fall and strike it on the pavement.

They further allege the man then fled the scene and was located by officers shortly after.

No charges have been laid.

Investigations are continuing and police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has vision to come forward.

It comes less than a week after 41-year-old businessman suffered critical injuries and later died after an assault outside a pub at Gympie on Sunday.
