Loved ones of a mum, critically injured in a car crash on the Fraser Coast, have launched a GoFundMe to help her children stay close to her while she fights for her life in Brisbane.

Watch: One critical, child hurt in serious crash near Hervey Bay

The family of a 44-year-old woman, who was critically injured in major crash near Hervey Bay last week, hopes the community will help her children stay closer to their mum.

Kylie Thorburn remains in a critical condition after a two-car crash on the intersection of Booral Road and River Heads Road on Tuesday, July 5.

The mother-of-four was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with head and chest injuries, and was later transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Ms Thorburn’s niece, Amy Fonteyn, started a GoFundMe to help raise funds for Ms Thorburn’s children.

She told The Chronicle on Wednesday, her aunt was still in a coma and had swelling on the brain.

The severity of Ms Thorburn’s injuries and whether she would be able to wake naturally from a coma was still not known

“So we’re just waiting day by day at this stage,” Ms Fonteyn said.

Other passengers in the car at the time of the crash were Ms Thorburn’s two children, 16-year-old Joey Dunn and 22-year-old Lucy Thorburn-Hancox.

Lucy had to undergo jaw surgery after the crash, but has since been discharged from hospital.

Ms Fonteyn said it had been a “tough” few years for the family as her mum, Ms Thorburn’s sister, passed away four years ago.

She started the GoFundMe page to raise money so Joey and Lucy could stay close to their mum while she fought for life in hospital.

“I’m just really wanting to raise funds to enable the kids to stay in accommodation close by to Brisbane, because living four hours away and only having somewhere to stay that’s a two hour round trip everyday is making it extra tough on them …” she said.

“I just want to make sure that they have just their basic essentials, because they don’t actually have a big family or support system … they don’t have that sense of community around them at the moment, so I guess they’re feeling quite isolated in their trauma.”

The GoFundMe has already raised $700 of the $1000 goal.

Lucy also shared the family’s GoFundMe on Facebook on Wednesday.

“A split second can really change your whole perspective and life! Anything will help me and my little brother at this point! Thankyou to anyone who can offer us any support … Anyone who knows our mom, knows her 4 kids are her whole world, and knows that our mom is ours!” a post read.

“Kylie Lee Thorburn I love you so much, my beautiful, strong, mommabear!!! You have to fight to wake up, we still need you here mom! Love you to infinity and beyond.”
