A Kawungan childcare worker who fled the scene of a crash in Torquay while her licence was suspended has been sentenced.

Jessica Michaela Alexander, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving without a licence and one count of failing to comply with the duties of a driver involved in a crash.

On February 12, Alexander was driving her silver Honda when she collided with another vehicle as she drove through a giveaway sign at the intersection of Tavistock and Exeter streets in Torquay.

After getting out of the mangled vehicle she “begged” the other driver not to call the police.

The court was told that at the time of the crash, her licence was suspended and she had an upcoming court appearance.

Police prosecutor Louesa McConnell told the court Alexander fled the scene once she saw the driver contacting police.

Mrs McConnell described the incident as a “hit and run” to the court.

Shortly afterwards police intercepted her and her badly damaged vehicle on Oleander Ave in Kawungan.

Self-represented, Alexander told the court “I am not a bad person”.

The court heard along with having four children, she worked as an early learning educator in Hervey Bay, earning $1000 per week.

She also told the court she was seeing a psychologist for her depression.

Magistrate Trinity McGarvie expressed her frustrations at the defendant’s behaviour.

“You knew you had to come to court yet you got behind the wheel,” she said.

Ms McGarvie fined Alexander $950 and suspended her licence for two years.

Convictions were recorded
