A teenager who had a potentially dangerous allergic reaction to carrot while staying on Fraser Island has told of how fellow travellers came to her aid during the frightening experience.

Isabella Baxter, 17, was visiting the island for the first time with her boyfriend and their friend on the weekend of January 7-8, when she realised the chilli she was eating contained carrot.

Isabella had previously had anaphylactic reactions to carrot.

With her boyfriend panicking, Isabella said she was focused on staying calm as they looked for help.

They packed up their campsite as fast as they could and headed to the closest camping area at Cathedrals.

But the time they arrived, Isabella was starting to feel the symptoms after consuming the carrot.

The shop was closed, but a boy was sitting at a public table and after they explained the situation, he asked the couple if they needed an EpiPen.

The couple then followed the boy to his campsite and they were given the EpiPen.

While she waited to see how bad her symptoms would get, a person at a neighbouring site gave Isabella two antihistamines.

“So I took those and that really, really helped,” she said.

Isabella said she was fortunate not to have too many symptoms which can often include swelling and feeling poorly.

“I haven’t had too many major reactions because it’s kind of easy to avoid, I guess.”

She didn’t have to use the EpiPen, but the people who helped her insisted she take it with her just in case.

The next day, Isabella was at Ngkala Rocks fishing with her partner when she ran into the people who had helped her the night before.

“I just thanked them again for it and just how much they really helped,” she said.

The next day they headed to the campsite and returned the EpiPen to the family.

Isabella said she felt very lucky her symptoms hadn’t been worse and that so many people had been willing to help her.

“I was very grateful to have people ready there to help,” she said.

“I was very appreciative of it.”

Despite the frightening experience, Isabella, who is from Newcastle, said she still enjoyed her first visit to the island.

“It’s such a beautiful island, we’re looking at going back in about two to three months,” she said.

But next time she will be bringing EpiPens along with her, Isabella said.
