A Hervey Bay shopping centre carpark has become the preferred hatching site for ducks after a one chose to build a nest in its car park and another duck paraded its brood.

On Monday morning, volunteers with animal rescue charity ANNARRA were called to the joint shared carpark of the Stockland Shopping Centre and Bay Central Tavern to find a Pacific black duck with 10 eggs underneath a tree.

Head volunteer Tania Jo Murphy said several onlookers were worried and concerned for the ducklings’ welfare.

“If you spot any ducks with eggs or hatchlings leave them alone and please do not disturb them,” she said.

Mother ducks are known to flee the nest if they are disturbed, which significantly compromises the ducklings’ safety.

She said similar situations happened “all the time” and the mother would have chosen the centre because of the “widespread availability” of food.

The organisation plans to wait until the ducklings hatch, which is expected to occur within the next three weeks before making any attempts to move them.

It is not the first sighting of ducks in the centre this week.

On Sunday another mother was spotted walking through the centre with eight adorable ducklings.

In the footage shot by Jack Watkins, the ducklings are seen waddling exploring the wide world for the first time.
