Earlier:
A witness at the scene of a terrifying carjacking in Hervey Bay has told of the moment a driver had a gun held to his head.
It comes after a Hyundai which had been reported stolen, crashed on Oleander Ave at Kawungan about 2.20pm Sunday.
The witness, whose name has been withheld, told the Fraser Coast Chronicle the driver of the stolen car demanded the driver of the second car and his wife hand over their car but that the driver chased him and a physical altercation took place.
According to the witness, when the driver asked the man demanding the car “what are you on?” he replied “you don’t want to know” before holding a gun to the driver’s head.
The witness said the armed man then ran further down the road before threatening a third driver at gunpoint.
A police spokeswoman said the occupants of the third vehicle, a black Holden Astra, had been forced to remain inside the car for about a kilometre before the gunman allowed the captives to leave.
The Astra was later discovered in Crooks Road, Craignish about 7.30pm.
Detectives are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
