The Biggenden community is throwing its support behind a grieving mum whose 10-year-old daughter and beloved partner were murdered just days before Christmas.
Todd Mooney, 54, and his daughter Kirra, 10, were found dead following a ferocious fire on the Biggenden property days before Christmas.
It was first thought to be a tragedy, but police have now confirmed the December 20 deaths are being treated as suspicious.
Police have launched a homicide investigation, believing a third party may have been involved, with a team of SES volunteers searching for guns or knives in a paddock near the Fenwicks Rd property where the bodies were found.
Now a Go Fund Me page has been started to raise funds for the surviving family member, Rebecca Hansen, who was set to wed Mr Mooney on December 28.
Ms Hansen’s brother Troy Hansen started the campaign which has so far raised $1735 for the grief-stricken mum against a target of $5000.
“We are hoping to assist the family with any outstanding costs associated with this tragedy,” Mr Hansen wrote on the Go Fund Me page.
“This life-changing incident happened five days before Christmas and eight days before Todd was meant to marry his partner Rebecca, Kirra’s mother.
“Todd ran a small bakery alongside his partner Rebecca in Biggenden.
“They had a rural property just outside of town where they lived with their 10-year-old daughter Kirra.
“The tragic loss of two people so close to Christmas and their upcoming nuptials has taken a toll on the family.
“Please help us to lighten the load of such a terrible tragedy for a family in their time of need.”
Last week, Brydon Jones, Kirra’s brother, paid tribute to his beloved sister, saying she had a “beautiful soul” and gorgeous nature”.
“She was funny and loved her friends and family,” he said.
A spokeswoman from the Biggenden Swimming Club also paid tribute to Kirra.
“Biggenden Swimming Club are saddened to hear one their Barracudas and her father had passed,” she said.
“Kirra was a valued member of the Biggenden Swimming Club.
“Kirra is a quiet achiever, gave everything a go and always tried her best on club nights. Kirra was a sweet and gentle soul with a kind heart and wore a smile on her face.
“Kirra’s parents also valued members of the club.
“Todd and Bec were great supporters of the Biggenden Swimming Club and our club appreciated their sponsorship.
“Kirra and Todd will be remembered fondly.”
