Fraser Coast Regional Council searching for staff for aquatic facilities

The staff shortage at the Fraser Coast’s aquatic centres is continuing with the council now asking for “fit, motivated” people to come and try the roles before they apply.

The search continues for employees to work at the region’s aquatic facilities, just months after the council was forced to close Maryborough’s 50m pool due to a shortage of lifeguards.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council will host a Try Then Apply Day at WetSide Water Park in Hervey Bay from 10am on October 24, encouraging those interested in working as lifeguards, swimming teachers or fitness instructors at the council’s aquatic facilities.

Potential employees will be able to talk to current staff about what they do, tour WetSide and do an instant interview.

Fraser Coast Regional Council director of development and community Gerard Carlyon said the council had recruited new lifeguards, but more staff were needed at WetSide Water Park, and the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres.

“The council has a range of roles available including lifeguards, swimming teachers and fitness instructors,” he said.

“We are looking for fit and motivated people who are available for an immediate start.

“If you have good people skills and a passion for fun but safe waterplay, then come on down to the Try Then Apply Day later this month or apply online now.

“With council offering training support, this is a great opportunity to get new qualifications and work in a flexible and fun outdoor environment.

“This could be perfect for someone wanting to balance casual work with their uni studies, looking for flexible arrangements during school hours or who is semi-retired, to name just a few examples.”

The lifeguard shortage came just as Maryborough Aquatic Centre reopened after months of work to repair the facilities after it was damaged by two floods at the start of the year.

At the time, Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said it had been a struggle to get applicants.
