Fraser Coast mayor: How to prepare for Cyclone Kirrily

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour has revealed how the council is preparing and what residents can do amid ever-changing cyclone warnings.

George Seymour Cyclone Press Conference

George Seymour has urged Fraser Coast residents to be onto of their preparation for the storms set to hit the region as a result of Cyclone Kirrily.

Speaking at a press conference at the council’s office in Torquay on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Seymour said the rain could first hit the region on Sunday but due to different modelling, the threat level was still unknown.

“Council is monitoring the situation very carefully and is in constant communication with the Bureau of Meteorology about what happens next when the cyclone makes landfall,” he explained

Outlining the regions near the Mary and Burrum River systems as being most vulnerable to flooding along with small catchments surrounding them, Mr Seymour said “it is all about having access to information”.

“People need to know there is a possibility that this could head in our direction,” he said

“A lot is changing every single day about what the system will do once it makes landfall”.

“We’ve gone through fires and floods, we are a resilient community.”

Cyclone Kirrily is forecast to move southwest, towards the Queensland coastline as it intensifies.

The system is likely to cross the Queensland coast late Thursday between Cardwell and Airlie Beach as a Category 3 system and track inland and south bringing with it heavy rain to parts of central, western and southern Queensland.

To prepare for Cyclone Kirrily, the council advises you to:

• Check your property for any loose material

• Fill vehicles fuel tanks

• Fill water containers as fresh drinking water may not be available after impact

• Ensure you have an emergency kit on hand

• Make sure household members are aware of where the strongest part of the home is

• Check on your neighbours to make sure they are prepared

• Keep a list of emergency phone numbers on display

• Withdraw a small amount of cash from the ATM as electronic banking may not be available after impact

• Park your vehicle under solid shelter

• Remain indoors unless asked to evacuate

• Pack any essential medications, baby formula, nappies or spare clothes

• Place all important documents and photographs in waterproof bags

• Ensure you have canned food and a can opener

• Make sure you have a portable radio and backup batteries
