A witness to the horrific crash that claimed the life of a young Hervey Bay man on Friday night has described the desperate fight to save his life as flames engulfed the car.
The woman, who asked not to be named, told the Chronicle she and her husband were driving with their baby had been driving in the area when they came across the crash on Nikenbah-Dundowran Rd about 7pm Friday.
Another man was there from a neighbouring home, using a bucket to throw water on the vehicle, the woman said.
The woman called triple-0 while her husband tried to assist the man with rescuing the crash victim.
But despite their attempts, they couldn’t help.
“It was terrible,” she said.
“I don’t think there was much that could have been done.”
The woman said ultimately, her husband, who was a fire safety trainer, had to pull the other man away from the vehicle because his life was also risk.
She said her thoughts went out to the family of the young man killed in the crash.
Police have identified the man as a 21-year-old from Craignish.
It comes after an officer from the Forensic Crash Unit confirmed to the Chronicle on Monday that the young man’s family had reported him missing on Friday which alerted officers to the fact that he was likely the previously unknown driver behind the wheel of a wreck at Nikenbah.
Police are in the process of preparing a report for the coroner.
Emergency services responded to reports a car had crashed into a ditch about 7pm on Friday.
The crash closed Nikenbah-Dundowran Rd, westbound of the Maryborough-Hervey Bay intersection for several hours.
Paramedics tried to help the driver but he died at the scene.
