A tragic fatality involving a car and a truck on the NSW Mid-North Coast have led police to remind people of the dangers of driving while tired.

Emergency services were called to an incident involving a car, which is yet to be identified, and a truck along the Pacific Highway near Macleay Valley Way at Bellimbopinni, north of Kempsey, about 4.45am on Friday.

It is believed the car travelling north struck the rear of the truck, which was parked in a designated rest bay, killing a 29-year-old male passenger in the front seat.

It is believed the man, who is yet to be formally identified, died on impact.

The 23-year-old female driver was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital for mandatory testing. The male driver of the truck was not injured.

Officers from the Mid North Coast Police District established a crime scene, with the Crash Investigation Unit tasked with finding out the cause of the crash.

Police Inspector Martin Burke of the Mid-North Coast police district said the Crash Investigation Unit will ultimately determine the cause of the crash, which given the time of day, could well be fatigue-related.

“Obviously the message is for people to just be mindful of fatigue,” he said.
