A man on the brink of graduating from Bayside Transformations has been identified as the driver left fighting for life after a horror crash near Bundaberg on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Tina Davie from Bayside Transformations confirmed Richard McCallion had been doing work with the organisation and had been making runs between Hervey Bay and Bundaberg three times a week to transport vegetables before his ute reportedly collided head-on with another ute on last week.

Mr McCallion had been transporting the vegetable for Bayside Vegies, a business initiative of Bayside Transformations, Hervey Bay’s residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.

Ms Davie said Mr McCallion was a stage four resident at the centre and was about to graduate from the program in October.

She said it was terrible for all concerned as he remained in a critical condition in hospital.

“He’s still not doing too well,” she said.

“We’re hoping for the best.”

Claus Huber, production manager at Bayside Vegies, said the incident had been a shock for his team.

He said Mr McCallion was a valued member of the team.

Although he was in a critical condition, Mr Huber said it “could have been so much worse”.

The crash happened about 10.13am at the corner of Childers Road and Airport Drive at Kensington on Friday.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services firefighter, Trevor Farraway said the driver was “lucky to be alive.”

Mr McCallion was carrying fresh produce at the time of the incident and spent 35 minutes trapped inside his vehicle.

The driver’s side door of the ute was significantly impacted, with firefighters having to disentangle the door and perform ramming on the dash to free him.

He was taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a critical condition.

The sad news comes at a time when the Bayside Transformations community should be celebrating.

The funds have finally been raised for the purchase of the charity’s property at Torquay Terrace, which means the organisation will be able to keep providing its services well into the future.

An event will be held on October 8, 2022 from 4-7pm at the centre to mark the achievement.
