Smoke will impact a Fraser Coast national park and surrounds for almost a month.

The planned burns will happen within the Poona National Park area, in Boonooroo Plains near Maaroom.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) said this would take place during July 7 until July 31 this year.

However, weather circumstances may extend the process.

The planned burn is expected to happen over three weeks.

The planned burns are part of an annual hazard reduction and conservation management program for parks and forests.

QPWS warns smoke will be seen in this area as a result and urge motorists to drive safely.

“The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas,” a QPWS release said.

The burn will happen along the Poona National Park border, near Maaroom.

“This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.”
