An Uber-like bus service is coming to Hervey Bay, allowing residents to call a bus to pick them up and drop them at selected locations including the hospital.

Queensland Minister for Transport Mark Bailey confirmed the existing 714 Kan-go service will be upgraded to the TransLink on-demand service from February 20.

The new service will have a widened coverage area and run from 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday.

It aims to “make it easier for locals in Point Vernon and parts of Pialba and Hervey Bay, who want to travel to places like Stocklands shopping centre and the hospital, to get around”.

Hervey Bay will be the second region in Queensland to have the on demand service following a trial on the Gold Coast.

“In particular this is great for some of our older residents to help them get around the community without the need to drive,” Hervey Bay MP Adrian Tantari said.

The wheelchair-accessible buses will cost from $1.20 to $2.40 depending on if riders have concession cards.

The concept resembles the accessibility of an Uber or Taxi, where the service requires you to register and book at least 30 minutes in advance, either on the website, app or by phoning 13 12 30.

Customers would be notified about 15 minutes before the driver arrives.

A spokesperson for Mr Bailey said the service was aimed “to get as close to your door as possible”.
