Faces of the Wide Bay road toll

The former partner of popular tiler and motocross cross champion Reece Westle has revealed the pair spoke just half an hour before he was killed in an e-bike crash at Hervey Bay.

Leaving a tribute on the Fraser Coast Chronicle’s page, Krystle Daly, who now lives on the Sunshine Coast, wrote “you were and always will be the love of my life … the last words you said to me on Sunday arvo were ‘I love you Krystle’.

“We were together in each other’s hearts and have been for over seven years now … we have had our ups and downs and had gone our separate ways more than once.

“But you were the one that got away … but one thing is certain, we never lost our love for each other.

“That will always be with me forever.”

Mr Westle was riding along the Hervey Bay Esplanade about 6.30pm on November 5 when he crashed into a power pole at Scarness. He died at the scene.

Speaking to this publication, Ms Daly shared a further tribute, saying “Reece touched the hearts of many and was always so full of energy”.

“He lit the place up no matter where he went and made all of our lives worth living every day,” she said

“He will hold a special place in my heart forever.”

Nathan Delfs, a former classmate of Mr Westle’s and fellow motocross rider said he carried a “daredevil-like attitude both on and off the track”.

“He was a character who loved living life to the fullest”.

“If there was a risky jump, you could guarantee Reece would jump it straight away, while the rest of us were all sitting around debating whether or not we wanted to do it”.

Mr Delfs said, “I want him to be remembered as a very naturally gifted motocross rider, but also as somebody who always had time for anybody”.

“Rest easy mate”.

A Hervey Bay woman and close friend of Mr Westle’s, who asked not to be identified, said motocross had been his passion.

“He was so good at it,” she said.

“He was a beautiful character, a beautiful person and a lovely guy.”

Describing the loss as “devastating”, she said, “It’s just so sad, remembering who he was”.

“He had an enormous talent for motocross – he was absolutely talented.

“I feel for his family. My heart goes out to them.

“You never expect your son or daughter will go before you.”

Over the years, Mr Westle’s racing achievements were often marked in the Fraser Coast Chronicle.

In January 2014, the Chronicle also covered a rescue in which Mr Westle played a key role.

He and another fisherman came to the aid of a jet ski rider and two child passengers when the jet ski rope caught on the engine.

They then returned to retrieve a 16-foot single hull that had capsized about 250m from the Gatakers boat ramp.

Boat owner Azee Swaleheen thanked his rescuers who spent about half an hour righting the boat and bringing it to shore.

“I didn’t think we were going to get it in,” Mr Westle said at the time.

“We were out fishing, next minute old mate’s asking for a hand.”
