Sold out sittings and visits from social media stars have pushed a new Fraser Coast sushi restaurant into the limelight.

Mary Go Sushi opened its doors for the first time on May 30 and has brought the unique sushi train style to Maryborough.

Owners Kristy and Robert Lesslie have dreamt of opening their own store after years of adoring the Japanese staple.

They moved to the Fraser Coast two-and-a-half years ago for a change of scenery and to be closer to an outdoor lifestyle, currently living in Boonooroo.

“We’re huge foodies. We travel for food and that’s us,” Mrs Lesslie said.

“We noticed Maryborough didn’t have one (sushi train), so we took the opportunity and decided to put one in.”

Both Mr and Mrs Lesslie come from diverse working backgrounds, with Kristy working in childcare while running a Brisbane plastering company with Robert.

“It’s been different for us, being in a whole new industry,” she said.

“I’m working in the front of the house while Rob works in the kitchen and we’re just trying to fit in, really.”

The couple have three qualified sushi chefs working in the kitchen along with three other cooks making authentic Japanese cuisine in the heart of Maryborough.

Influencers are even having a meal at the new venue.

TikTok sensation Jimmy Judge, a food reviewer and competitive eater, visited the restaurant to try and take down its “Sumo Challenge”, a 2.5kg plate of sushi that competitors must finish in 30 minutes.

The social media star set the pace and finished the tray in 46 minutes, with Kristy and Robert later changing the time limit to one hour for the next competitor.

With over 90 different items on the menu, the chefs and owners have already set their sights on further aspirations for the restaurant.

“We might think about opening up a food van and heading to different events with it,” Kristy said.

“We’ll just see how this one runs for the moment.”

Mary Go Sushi can be found at 193-195 Adelaide St, Maryborough.
