A new mobile vet service in Hervey Bay has already gained a loyal following after being open for just a month.

Hervey Bay Mobile Vet owner Dr Jonathan Shen said the service was fully booked in June and was filling up fast for July.

After working as a vet for 10 years and living in Hervey Bay for the last five, Dr Shen noticed residents have been struggling to bring their dogs and cats to vets, especially their ageing pets.

“I don’t think that the group environment at the vet hospitals would be a good experience for ageing pets,” he said.

“I’ve noticed a lot of old dogs have struggled to go into vets; they don’t like the loud noises, and younger dogs and puppies running around barking at them.

“They need somewhere peaceful and quiet.”

He said that the travel itself can be painful and traumatic for them, especially if they suffer from a physical ailment.

Dr Shen’s mobile vet clinic offers services such as vaccinations, heartworm treatment, home euthanasia, health checks, arthritis care for do, microchipping and more.

He said with a team of three and only one vet the service was in its early stages but looked to possibly expand within the next 12 months.

Dr Shen said while their services were for dogs and cats currently, they hope to extend to larger animals such as goats, cows and horses in the future.

Hervey Bay Mobile Vet is available for residents in:

  • Urangan, Torquay, Scarness, Eli Waters, Urraween, Kawungan, Point Vernon and Pialba from Monday to Thursday
  • And alternates on Fridays between Dundowran and Craignish; and Nikenbah, Takura and Sunshine Acres
