Shark spotted swimming through Qld city park

This is why you don’t play around in flood waters.

A small bull shark has been filmed swimming among debris in the Maryborough’s flooded Queens Park.

The footage was shared by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday after the park went under water due to heavy rainfall and the rising Mary River.

In the video, credited to Judi Ellis, a small fin can be seen emerging from water near the park’s rotunda.

The footage is all the more alarming given children have been playing in the floodwaters at the park.

The tweet from QFES emphasised the message: “We often talk about the dangers lurking in floodwaters, now here’s the proof.

“A small bull shark has been spotted in flood waters at Queens Park, Maryborough.

“With children on school holidays, it is a timely reminder of how dangerous flood waters can be.”

The Mary River, which river is known to house a healthy bull shark population and the odd crocodile, broke its banks on Saturday, with the city expecting a major flood peak of nine metres overnight.

For the first time, Maryborough is also using its new flood levee in an effort to protect the CBD from inundation.

The wild weather has caused chaos in the region, with reports of farm animals being washed away.

One man was killed in floodwaters between Maryborough and Gympie on Friday night as 650mm of rain fell in parts of the region.
