A major road project which will improve access to Hervey Bay’s city centre and limit traffic congestion is progressing to the next stage.
The Boundary Rd extension project, which has previously been described as the “missing link” between Boundary Rd and Kawungan Way, will stretch for 1.9km and improve the seaside city’s east-west road links.
The massive project costs about $26.5m and is being funded with support from the federal government through the Hinkler Regional Deal, state government and Fraser Coast Regional Council.
The council has confirmed that from mid-November Grevillea St at Kawungan - a busy thoroughfare to Kawungan State School - will be closed for four weeks to allow for drainage works.
“The works so far have not required major road closures, but that will change in mid-November when drainage works will start in Grevillea St where the road will intersect with Boundary Road,” councillor Denis Chapman said.
“These works will require a deep excavation across Grevillea St, which will mean a full road closure at this intersection for about four weeks, weather permitting.
“This is a busy area with a grocery store nearby and a child care centre and school further down the road, so we urge motorists to take care and plan their journeys while this work is underway.”
According to the council’s website, essential water main works will also start in early November at the Denmans Camp Rd end of the Boundary Rd extension, which are expected to go for one night.
Mr Chapman said in a statement that the Boundary Rd extension would provide “alternate and improved access to the Hervey Bay city centre, major shopping centres, tourist destinations and the medical centre precinct”.
In a council meeting in September 2021 SGQ Pty Ltd was awarded the tender for the construction of the project.
The project started in November 2021 and is expected to be completed by September 2023.
