The expectant partner of a man killed in Gympie early Friday morning has opened up about his efforts to turn his life around after being jailed in 2020 for his role in a man’s death.
Andrew Kelly, 28, was the sole person in the car and died at the scene of the crash, which happened on Sorensen Rd near its intersection with Serenity Drive on the Southside, about 1am Friday, May 16.
Police said initial investigations indicated Mr Kelly was travelling in the grey BMW when it left the road and rolled, coming to a stop on the driver’s side door.
On Monday, Mr Kelly’s partner Emma Oxley, who is expecting a daughter with Mr Kelly, revealed how excited he had been about becoming a dad and how he had tried to turn his life around.
The 28-year-old was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in 2020 after pleading guilty to the manslaughter death of a 22-year-old man at Caboolture in 2018.
He was required to serve half of it before becoming eligible for parole.
“Over the almost 20 years I have known him, he made some mistakes but he did everything in his power to turn things around and become the incredible man he was,” a grieving Ms Oxley said on Monday.
“Andrew was so excited to be a dad to our daughter who is on her way, Ivy-Mae Maree Kelly.
“He adored her from the moment we knew she existed and he would have been the most amazing father she could have ever asked for.
“Andrew was my soulmate and I was so lucky for every day I got to have with him.
“I will love him for the rest of my life.”
Ms Oxley said the 28-year-old had a “large, loving family who all adored him”.
“He left behind his wonderful mum and stepdad, his grandmother, a brother and five sisters and lots of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins that he was always there to support. He loved them all,” Ms Oxley said.
“His death has been a huge shock to us all and we appreciate everybody who has reached out to us so far with their support.
“He really had done everything he could to be there for me and his daughter and turn everything around.”
The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign “to reduce the financial burden on our mum and step dad”.
