Agnes Water dad sentenced for supplying drugs to teen daughter

A dad, who gave his teenage daughter cannabis to ease her anxiety, has been sentenced for his secret criminal behaviour. He told police officers “I know it’s illegal, but it’s good for her”.

A father of three, who gave cannabis to his teenage daughter to help ease her anxiety, had his secret criminal behaviour exposed when police executed a raid at his home.

The man, aged 42, of Agnes Water, pleaded guilty in Maryborough Supreme Court to producing dangerous drugs, supplying drugs to a minor and possessing dangerous drugs.

The court heard in May last year, police raided the man’s home and found three cannabis plants.

A further search of the property also revealed plants growing in nearby bushland.

The man initially denied the plants were his, but later made admissions.

Five water pipes were later discovered in the teenager’s bedroom, as well as a small amount of cannabis in a bowl.

When questioned by police, the man told them he had been using the drug since he was a young man and he believed it would help address his daughter’s mental health issues, telling the officers “I know it’s illegal, but it’s good for her”.

His decision to give the teen cannabis was described as a “lapse of judgment”.

The court heard the man had an excellent work history and was a good father to his children, who he had largely raised as a single parent.

A reference prepared for the man from his workplace described him as a reliable and valuable member of the team.

The man was sentenced to six months in jail with immediate release on parole.

He is the second dad to be sentenced this week in Maryborough Supreme Court for supplying marijuana to a teenager.

On Monday, Lee Jay Cowlard pleaded guilty to seven counts of supplying dangerous drugs, including three counts with the aggravation of supplying a minor. Full story here.
