Eskdale Park, home of the Maryborough Wallaroos, was in urgent need of an upgrade, member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said in a media release Friday.

The changerooms require urgent upgrades, while the grandstands could be made more accessible, he said.

Mr Saunders said in the release it was important to see the football ground upgraded.

“Our Maryborough community loves their footy so it’s only right that Eskdale Park is as good as it can be,” he said.

“You never know if the next Broncos NRLW or Cowboys NRL player is taking the field in a Roos jersey and giving them the best start to their footy career matters to me.

“We have a growing female competition here on the Fraser Coast and it just isn’t right that the change rooms aren’t totally fit-for-purpose for NRLW games being held here.”

It comes a week after pledges were made to upgrade the netball courts in Bundaberg.

On Monday, September 16, Bundaberg MP Tom Smith alongside club president Matthew Leighton, originally promised $400,000 for upgrades to lighting and accessibility, with the Bundaberg Netball Association contributing $50,000.

In a bid to outdo Labor’s pledge, LNP candidate Bree Watson and party leader David Crisafulli fired back, promising even more funds if elected, with $620,000 to go toward resurfacing the courts on top of the lighting and accessibility improvements.

Premier Steven Miles said he would always stand on his record of providing sport for Queensland.
