A man who was shot by police remains in custody after he allegedly pointed a sawn-off hunting rifle at specialist officers following a stolen car pursuit and hours-long standoff at Logan on Friday night.

An exclusion zone was established at a Bix Court property in Crestmead after shots were fired at police tracking an allegedly stolen car.

It is understood the man was allegedly armed with a sawn-off hunting rifle.

It’s believed that he surrendered out the front of the Bix Court property and then bolted back inside closely followed by officers from the highly-trained Special Emergency Response Team (SERT).

The man then allegedly aimed his rifle at SERT officers in a room of the property before he was shot and taken into custody.

Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior described the police-involved shooting as “one of the most dangerous situations and incidents Brisbane has experienced for some time” as he called for the responding officers to be given bravery citations.

“An active, armed offender whilst driving shooting at pedestrians, drivers and police,” he alleged.

“It will be alleged that this offender later raised a firearm towards police after agreeing to surrender.

“Police attempted to intercept the offender’s vehicle and it will be alleged that shots were fired towards police and their vehicle, just narrowly missing.”

POLAIR and police began tracking a stolen Suzuki Vitara in the Browns Plains area about 6.40pm.

A tyre deflation device was successfully deployed, and the stolen vehicle later came to a stop near Browns Plains Road.

Police approached the stolen vehicle, and the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle fired a shot towards police about 7.50pm.

A pursuit commenced.

During the pursuit, the driver of the stolen vehicle fired further shots at police.

No one was injured.

The Suzuki Vitara was located abandoned near Central Court, Hillcrest, about 8.20pm and the driver fled into a waiting stolen Kia Cerato.

POLAIR tracked the stolen Kia Cerato to an address in Bix Court, Crestmead where specialist police and negotiators were engaged about 8.40pm.

The man was shot by police about 12.40am on Saturday.

Medical assistance was provided and he was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he remains undergoing further treatment.

No police officers were physically injured.

It is understood the man remains in police custody in the hospital’s ICU.

No charges have been laid.

The Ethical Standards Command commenced an investigation with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Mr Prior said due to the “proficiency and tactical advantage of our SERT officers” the alleged offender was eventually placed into custody.

“Officers of every level acted professionally and communicated to contain this offender, minimising risks to the public,” he said.

“Ethical standards command will complete a review but police should not be concerned, police should be commended and consideration be given for bravery awards in this instance.

“This is another chilling example of the dangerous environment that police work in every day...every officer that goes to shifts should come home safely.”

Asked whether tasers were deployed, Mr Prior said: “Multiple use of force options were used during the arrest”.

“It will be alleged that the offender almost shot police at point blank range,” he said.

Police have declared an emergency situation at Crestmead following reports of an armed person at a property. It was later revoked.

“This was a highly volatile and dangerous situation.”

Mr Prior said the man was not a registered firearm holder.

“A firearm is of major concern when out in the community, being used by an offender that is not licenced and having access to a large amount of ammunition,” he said.

Bix Court resident Lina Ahmedzaid said her family had no idea there was a police incident in the street until her dad went outside for his “late night cup of tea”.

“He was tapped on the shoulder by a police officer (who) said ‘you should probably go inside’…at some point the guns went off…it was pretty scary, we were all hiding,” Ms Ahmedzaid said.

Several other neighbours returned home on Saturday morning after the emergency declaration was revoked.
