Two more people have been killed on Queensland’s roads in the past 24 hours, in two separate crashes in soggy conditions around the state’s south.

A 28-year-old man has died in hospital overnight following a crash on the Bruce Highway near Tiaro.

Police say the man, from Kalkie near Bundaberg, died after the car he was driving and another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction collided near Charnocks Rd.

A 21-year-old Roma woman who was behind the wheel of the other car was also flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A third person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Meanwhile, another man died last night after the car he was driving and a truck collided at an intersection at Stanthorpe last night.

The incident occurred on the New England Highway about 10.20pm.

Police say a truck travelling south on the New England Highway collided with the sedan travelling in the opposite direction near the intersection with McGlew Street.

The driver of the car, a Stanthorpe man aged in his 20s, died at the scene.

A female passenger and the male truck driver were not physically injured.

Earlier on Monday, a 66-year-old man was killed in a three-vehicle crash at Sunnybank.

Initial investigations indicate about 9.45am a car was travelling northbound on Jackson Rd approaching Beenleigh Rd, when it veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with two other vehicles.

The driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene while the drivers of the two other vehicles involved did not suffer serious physical injuries.

Also on Monday, a young male died in a rollover on a North Queensland rural property.

A rescue helicopter was flown to a property at Long Pocket, west of Ingham, after emergency services received reports of a young person being seriously injured in a vehicle rollover about 7.20pm.

Monday’s fatal crashes followed a spate of serious crashes on Queensland roads over the weekend left eight dead, including five on Sunday.

Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder made a heartfelt plea to road users on Monday, describing the past three months on Queensland roads as “one of the darkest moments” he’s witnessed in over three decades on the job.

“This is one of the darkest moments of road safety in Queensland in my 35 years as a sworn police officer,” Acting Chief Supt Rohweder said.

“We just really need people to take stock of what they’re doing.

“Think about what you’re doing, respect other road users and respect yourself. The consequences that unfold as a tragedy of this behaviour is life long.”
