A dog has died and another is undergoing behavioural rehabilitation after they were found tied to trees in Brisbane in recent weeks.
The discoveries prompted a call for information by the RSPCA in a bid to help find the dogs’ owners and those responsible for abandoning them.
On August 14, a male American Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross was found tied to a tree at Wyampa Road, Bald Hills, unfortunately having succumbed to its injuries.
Just over a month later, another dog was found tied to a tree at Tovey Park in Boronia Heights with puncture wounds on the neck and marker drawings on the body.
Thankfully, the male Mastiff was rescued by an RSPCA Inspector and is now receiving veterinary care and behavioural rehabilitation.
“As you can imagine, this poor dog is quite scared and is getting all the care he needs right now to hopefully overcome his ordeal and make a full recovery,” RSPCA spokeswoman Emma Lagoon said.
Investigators are appealing for anyone with information about the dogs, or their owners, to come forward.
“We need to see an end to this type of animal abandonment and neglect,” Ms Lagoon said.
“It’s absolutely not okay to leave an injured dog tied to a tree. As for the markings, it’s plain disrespectful.”
Ms Lagoon said abandonments account for 10 to 11 per cent of all animal welfare cases in Queensland each month.
“Sadly, hundreds of pets each month are reported as abandoned to the RSPCA, whether they are cases like this or, left behind at properties, or dumped.”
“Please ask for help. We can help rehome pets when people have no other option.”
Earlier this year, council officers were offered counselling when up to 20 dead animals, including a decapitated koala and a slaughtered dog were found in a barrel at Toowong.
There is no suggestion the incidents are linked.
