THE Australian military is gearing up for the nation’s largest joint US-Australian military exercise in July.
Australian navy, army and air force personnel will start training throughout Queensland in coming months in preparation for Talisman Sabre 2019, according to the Australian Defence Department.

MORE than 34,000 military personnel will converge on the Sunshine state - up from an originally anticipated 25,000 - for the biennial training activity between June and August with the peak of the exercise from July 11 to 24.
Exercise Talisman Sabre is designed for the Australian and American militaries to practice combat readiness and interoperability between the two nations.
It also has a focus on planning and conduct of intensity “high end” warfighting, according to the Department of Defence web site.
“This exercise is a major undertaking that reflects the closeness of our alliance and the strength of the ongoing military-military relationship,” a statement on the web site says.
The bulk of the mock fighting will occur at the Australian Defence Force Training Area at Shoalwater Bay in Central Queensland but will extend as north to Townsville and as far south as the Evans Head Air Weapons Range in northern NSW.
Other areas will include Stanage Bay, Bundaberg, the Mackay and Whitsunday regions as well as areas over the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef.

The field training exercise will incorporate force logistics, land force manoeuvres, air, urban and maritime operations as well as amphibious landings and Special Forces activities.
A Talisman Sabre open day is scheduled for July 6 at the Rockhampton showground where visitors will be able to view military helicopters, armoured vehicles and specialist military personnel.
It will be the eighth time Exercise Talisman Sabre has been held in Australia, though a number of other joint military training exercises have preceded it over the past few decades.
It will also include forces from Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Previously, some Talisman Sabre participants have been stationed across various parts of Australia, however the defence department said that will not be the case this year.
Military personnel will only use blank and simulated ammunition during the exercise.
