An unlikely sleep in and a trip to the beach is at the top of former Broncos star Darius Boyd’s Father’s Day wishlist.
Brisbane-based Boyd hung up his boots one year ago and is looking forward to spending the “extra special” day – his first Father’s Day as a family of five – with wife Kayla and daughters Willow, six, Romi, two, and Gia, six months.
Revealing the desire to have a fourth child, Boyd who was an only child growing up, said family meant everything to him.
“I could go for one more yet,” Boyd said.
“They are all different ages and at different stages of their lives. They have their own little personalities and it’s nice to watch.
“There is never a dull moment around here.
“I have always wanted two children but as I have gotten older, the more the merrier I think”.
Boyd, who has battled publicly with mental health issues, and was admitted to a mental health clinic to seek treatment for depression, has turned his life around, with a renewed focus on his family and friends.
“To have my own family is amazing. There is never a dull moment in this household. When it comes to 5pm it’s homework and baths, on weekends it’s parks, pools or the beach,” he said.
“When you are young you don’t realise how lucky you are. Especially as a man, you don’t think about getting married and having kids. To hold my three girls is something I am lucky to do”.
When he’s not chasing after his three children, Boyd works as a mental health advocate within corporate and community areas, including a community program for the Brisbane Broncos.
“I am so lucky to have my family and their support,” Boyd said.
He said Willow was into gymnastics, dancing and Nippers and together they loved watching movies, especially Home Alone 1 and 2.
“Romi is starting to talk and it’s nice to see her interact,” he said.
“Her first words were daddy, and so was Willow’s, so that was special. Gia is starting to smile now too.”
Boyd described his family as “amazing and beautiful”.
“I am looking forward to spending Father’s Day with them, it’s our first one with Gia”.
