A WOMAN fleed her own home screaming after her husband threatened her, punched her in the head, calling her a "dog" and a "slut".

Appearing via video link the defendant, 42, kept his head lowered as police prosecutor senior constable Jodie Tahana recounted the harsh details of his offending in Dalby Magistrates Court.

The court heard at 11.22pm on September 8, police were called to a home in Dalby after reports from neighbours that they had heard yelling and screaming from a woman in the house.

When police arrived, they found the defendant alone where he told police his wife had been "going off" at him and she was "off her meds".

Senior constable Tahana told the court the defendant and the victim were both addicted to drugs.

The defendant told police care workers had taken the victim away to a safe place.

On September 9, police interviewed the victim who told them she had asked the defendant for her phone but he had refused to give it back because he was using it. When she told him to "hurry up", the defendant threw the phone into a wall, shattering it.

He then punched the victim's head into her bedhead, and pinned her to the bed by pressing his knee into her face.

He told her, "I'll show you what happens to dogs".

On September 11, police were called again to the address after the victim and defendant were heard arguing over cigarettes. Neighbours told police the defendant called the victim a "slut" and a "dog".

The victim ran screaming from her house, calling for people to call the police.

The defendant served 83 days pre-sentence custody before his date in court on Tuesday, and Magistrate Tracy Mossop told senior constable Tahana a term of imprisonment was a "given".

The offences were also committed during the period of a suspended sentence.

Defence lawyer Charles Lumsden told the court the defendant had met the victim in 2005, and they married in 2015. They have four biological children and one stepchild together who have been removed from their custody.

Mr Lumsden told the court the defendant and victim were introduced to drugs by work colleagues in Warwick, and it had been "all downhill since then".

Mr Lumsden said the defendant had participated in a drug rehabilitation course while in custody as well as a "happy fathers, happy families" course, and hopes to be reunited with his children after his release.

Mossop described the defendant's behaviour as "totally despicable".

"You have a problem with drugs which has escalated and caused you to be violent towards your former partner and the mother of your children," she said.

"I hope she continues to have nothing to do with you."

The defendant pleaded guilty to contravening a domestic violence order as an aggravated offence.

Mossop sentenced him to 12 months imprison, with a release date set for January 8 2020. A conviction was recorded.
