Firefighters have managed to contain a large, fast moving grassfire in its tracks as it forced the evacuation of a regional school.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said seven fire crews were at the scene of the fire in Jondaryan, as well as firefighting aircraft.

Emergency services first responded to the blaze about 11am on Monday that initially started as a slow-moving grassfire near Scott Rd.

Despite being contained by crews this morning, the spokesman said the fire had jumped containment lines and burnt out of control.

The fire grew in size and escalated into a fast-moving blaze in the vicinity of Scott Rd and Earl St.

A prepare to leave warning was issued at 2.37pm for properties along Duke St, Station Rd and Jondaryan Evanslea Rd.

“Conditions could get worse quickly,” the warning stated.

“Firefighters are working to contain the fire. You should not expect a firefighter at your door. Firefighting aircraft are helping ground crews.”

By 2.55pm the fire was contained again on the ground.

The QFES spokesman said fire crews were working to put a fire break in place near Jondaryan State School, with the fire forcing the evacuation of the school.

“Students were told to go home,” the spokesman said.

“Fire crews will remain on scene for the next few hours to monitor the situation and dampen down on hot spots.”

The prepare to leave warning remains active, and residents in the area have been warned to continue to monitor conditions.
