Robert James Condon: Predator jailed after horror child abuse images find

‘It is inconceivable to normal members of the community’: A man previously convicted of preying on a young girl was berated in court for his ‘sick, evil pleasure’, after police found more than 100 disturbing pictures and videos on his phone.

A Quinalow man who was on a suspended sentence for grooming a child is behind bars after police found over 100 disturbing images and videos of children on his phone.

Robert James Condon denied having any illegal content on his phone as police checked it on February 12, 2021 after discovering he had social media apps downloaded, which was in breach of his suspended sentence conditions.

Crown prosecutor Brendan White told the court police found 138 videos and 30 images of children engaged in sexual activities on the 45-year-old’s phone.

One video included a young girl being subjected to bestiality.

The court heard in 2019 the Quinalow man was sentenced to 15 months’ jail, suspended after serving three months, after he groomed a girl under 16 with the intent to commit sexual acts, which included sending the 13-year-old girl suggestive messages.

Barrister Frank Martin said his client, who breached 10 conditions of his sentence, thought he was only supposed to notify police if he messaged people on social media apps.

Judge Nathan Jarro chastised the 45-year-old for his role in the abuse of children.

“It is inconceivable to normal members of the community the sick, evil pleasure from viewing the material,” he said.

“Children are being abused and by viewing the material and you encourage a market for this warped behaviour. They’re vulnerable and deserve protection.”

The charges were originally set to go to trial on Wednesday but Condon made a last-minute decision to plead guilty to one count of possessing child sex abuse material and 10 summary offences related to breaching his compliance conditions.

The suspended sentence was reactivated and he will spend at least three months in jail, with his parole eligibility date set for November 16.
