A drug dealer who was accused of ripping off a buyer ended up in court after a physical fight broke out outside a Western Downs cafe due to the confrontation.
Peter James Young appeared in Chinchilla Magistrates Court on October 12 after he was caught not only supplying drugs but punching someone on the street in broad daylight.
Police prosecutor Derek Brady said on August 23 the victim was at Tara cafe with his brother-in-law when he saw Young yelling at his sister outside in an “aggressive manner”.
“(The victim) went outside when Young approach him and said ‘Have you got a problem or what?’,” Sergeant Brady said
The court was told before the victim could respond, Young punched him in the mouth and the pair fell to the ground fighting with Young punching the victim multiple times in the head causing cuts to his lip, elbow and hands.
Sergeant Brady said while the police were speaking with Young he confessed that the fight broke out due to drugs.
“(Young) told police someone asked him to arrange cannabis and the person he gave it to accused him of taxing it, which meant taking out some of it for himself,” Sergeant Brady said.
“He stated he gave them 7g and made free admissions to the supply of drugs.”
Defence lawyer Brad Skuse said his 26-year-old client confirmed the offences were “intertwined” and said that’s what caused the argument in the first place.
The court was told Young has a history of drug-related offences and a dated offence of common assault.
Acting magistrate Andrew Walker told the man that people don’t expect to see fights breaking out on the street.
“Whether it was over drugs, people mouthing off, it just shouldn’t happen,” he said.
Young pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and supplying drugs.
He was sentenced to nine months’ probation and a conviction was recorded.
