A young man with “anger management issues” who was already on probation for violent offending has again faced the Dalby court after he assaulted a police officer during a night of heavy drinking.

Jamahl William Troy Wright was walking home near Myall Creek just after midnight on November 14, 2021, after attending an 18th birthday party.

Dalby Magistrates Court heard the 19-year-old was walking in the middle of the road when a police officer pulled up alongside him and asked him to move off the road.

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said that when approached, Wright told the officer to, “F — k off” and “I’m just f — king heading home, c — t”.

The court was told that Wright continued to ignore the officer’s instructions and stayed in the middle of the road near Patrick and Sydney Sts, becoming increasingly aggressive towards the police officer.

Sergeant Hutchins said Wright yelled, “What f--king crime have I done,” despite being warned to calm down, and threatened to spit on the cop when his girlfriend handed over his ID as requested.

He said the officer then arrested Wright for public nuisance and advised the young Dalby man he would be doing a pat-down search, at which point Wright began taking off his clothes.

Wright was eventually subdued and put in the back of the police vehicle, but in one last burst of anger slammed the car door on the officer’s arm, causing a 10cm abrasion, bruising, and swelling.

“I note (that) realistically, it was a tantrum and he slammed the door and collected the officer,” Sergeant Hutchins said.

“Had it been a deliberate act, I would’ve suggested he be looking at imprisonment. He has issues with anger management.”

The court was told Wright was on probation at the time and had previously been sentenced for violent offending, including assault.

Defence lawyer Julia Molloy said Wright was very intoxicated when he left the 18th birthday that night, and assured the court he had not reached that level of intoxication since.

Wright pleaded guilty to one count each of public nuisance, unlawful assault, and obstructing a police officer.

He was sentenced to 120 hours of community service over 12 months. No conviction was recorded.
