A drunken late night Macca’s run has landed a Chinchilla man in court after he bumped into local police having their dinner.
Leigh Bradley Cooke appeared in Chinchilla Magistrates Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, driving while disqualified and contravening a police order.
The court heard on May 3 at about 10.25pm McDonald’s staff called police and reported a man in their drive-through who appeared to be intoxicated behind the wheel.
Police, who were eating inside the restaurant, walked out of the building and spotted a “belligerent” Cooke stumbling around in the car park.
Police asked the 42-year-old Cooke to give a breath test, which he refused.
Cooke also refused to give police his name and address.
Cooke was then taken back to the police station for a blood test, which he also refused.
His license was immediately suspended.
Several hours later at 1am, police again spotted Cooke driving again.
CCTV footage from a service station showed Cooke get into his car and leave the business at 1.30pm on June 3 despite still being suspended.
In sentencing, Magistrate Kathleen Payne took into account that the mature age offender had a limited driving history for someone who worked in the heavy vehicle field.
He was handed a 12-month licence suspension, and fined $1500.
No conviction was recorded.
