An elderly Dalby man and good Samaritan have reportedly been struck with a hammer during a shocking incident at the older man’s home on Sunday morning.
The good Samaritan suffered the injuries after joining forces with fellow neighbours and coming to the aid of the elderly resident.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, reports that it was just after 7am when a man and a woman arrived at Nicholson Street at an elderly man’s home.
When the owner confronted the pair, he was reportedly attacked with what was believed to be a hammer.
The witness said the next-door neighbour leapt into action, jumping the fence to help the older man before being hit with the hammer several times himself.
“Myself and another neighbour then ran over and helped pin them to the ground until police arrived,” the neighbour said.
Queensland Police confirmed they were called just before 7.30am to the incident and one person was in custody.
Photos from the scene show forensic officers photographing a house.
A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics also arrived to the scene after reports of an alleged assault, and had transported three patients to Dalby Hospital in stable conditions – including two with head injuries.
The neighbour told the Dalby Herald that it was great to see the neighbourhood rally for one of their own in a time of need.
“Was such a good feeling with us all helping – and most of us meeting for the first time,” he said.
But the man didn’t accept the title of hero, saying that title was for the next-door neighbour who first came to the elderly man’s aid.
“The neighbour that was hit was the real hero,” he said.
Police investigations are continuing.
