'Most significant advance': Attorney-General announces national firearms registry

A Dalby man has faced court after a police raid on his property uncovered 18 firearms and evidence that he was illegally making guns.

Trevor John Robb, 72, faced Dalby District Court and pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of 10 or more firearms, manufacturing weapons without a licence and possession of explosives namely ammunition and black powder.

The court was told that authorities issued a warrant at Robb’s home and on July 26, 2023 they found a workshop underneath his house fitted out with equipment which he had been using to manufacture homemade firearms, including a revolver and a pistol with a silencer.

The court was told all but one of the firearms were fireable, many were loaded and none were properly stored.

Robb also did not possess a licence to own firearms.

The court was told Robb had a background in engineering and panelling and had begun making homemade firearms during Covid.

Crown prosecutor Zachary Kaplan stressed the severity of the crime and its risk to the community.

“We are lucky to live in a society free from gun violence and that can only be maintained through regulation,” the Crown submitted.

Defence Lawyer Frank Martin said Robb had zero criminal history and had limited education dropping out of school in year 3 to work for his dad.

When sentencing Judge Terry Gardiner took into account Robb’s lack of criminal history, his co-operation with police and his early plea

He was sentenced to two and half years imprisonment suspended for two and a half years. He was also required to forfeit the firearms and a conviction was recorded.
