Queensland has recorded 10,953 new Covid cases and one death in the past 24 hours as authorities warn “we are stepping up to a very major emergency”.
Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard said the plan is not to stop the spread of this virus, rather “we are just trying to slow it down a little bit” he said.
“We don’t know that there won’t be new strains in the future,” he said.
Dr Gerrard said the “bulk” of Covid-positive people across the state are “younger people”.
Amid the rapidly approaching emergency, all health staff have been told to be prepared to be reallocated to care for Covid patients, regardless of their speciality.
Dr Gerrard previously said the “real number (of cases) was significantly higher” than the recorded number.
That was because some people could not get a test, and others had taken rapid antigen tests, of which authorities had no records.
