Dalby students produce pick of the pen

Students from Dalby State High School have swept the field at the Tara Show, winning multiple awards.

DALBY State High School have put on a blue ribbon performance at the Tara Show over the weekend.

The school took a group of five students to compete in the prime lambs and the show poultry events, and the small team exceeded all expectations.

They claimed 1st and 2nd prize with their heavy trade lambs, while their heavy trade ewe was also positioned at the top of the podium and named champion pen.

Ms Janine Milne is the Agricultural coordinator at the school and was stoked with the result, especially considering this is the first year the school has entered in show competitions.

"We thought our sheep were alright but to come out and win at our first ever event was a great result,” Ms Milne said.

"There was a great level of competition, around 100 head of lamb were there so we did really well to win.”

The groups first ever show was the previous week at Bell, and Ms Milne was ecstatic that they were named as winners there as well but knew how hard the students had worked to get there.

"We were very surprised, especially last week at Bell.

"Thursday afternoons the students would head to the Bunya campus where they would learn about picking what animals will go to the show and the structure of the animal.”

DSHS have been selectivity breeding their Dorper sheep for the last three years to ensure they were primed for competition this year.

Year 10 student Jayden Schultz says that he loves the program, and plans on doing until he completes his schooling.

"It's fun playing with the animals and learning about them, it gives you something to do on the weekends instead of being on the street.

"I've always enjoyed handling animals and I want to be a farmer when I finish school,” Mr Schultz said.

The group from DSHS will be competing at the Inglewood show this weekend in an effort to make it three wins from three.
