Intoxicated Toowoomba teen terrifies elderly couple in Rangeville home

A teenager who jumped through a number of Toowoomba backyards and brazenly tried to break into occupied homes will soon be released from custody.

A Toowoomba teenager who forced his way into an elderly couple’s home after claiming a friend of his had been shot will soon be released from detention after spending 79 days on remand for the break and enter offence.

The 17-year-old had just been released into the community on a conditional release order when the offences occurred.

Toowoomba Childrens Court was told there were unusual elements to the boy’s crimes which occurred at Rangeville on February 2, 2025.

The court was told the teenager, who seemed to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance, tried to open the back door of two residences, while the occupants were at home.
Both times they yelled at him to go away, despite the teen ordering them to let him inside.

However the third time he was successful, subjecting an elderly couple to his frantic behaviour, where he paced around their home, looking in each room, and asking for help because his friend had been shot.

The court was told the couple in their 70s remained calm despite their fear, and tried their best to de-escalate the situation, until police arrived and arrested the teen.

They told police they regretted going to the boy’s aid.

When police took up with the teenager’s friend, who he alleged had been shot in the arm, the court was told the woman laughed and said she was fine.

He had been remanded in custody since his arrest.

Solicitor Michael Corbin told the court during the “unusual” unlawful entry of the property, the teenager did not try to steal anything.

Magistrate Kyna Morice told the teenager she hoped during his time in detention he had reflected upon the seriousness of his crime and the fear he would have caused the couple.

The teenager pleaded guilty to two charges of attempted break and enter, and one charge of break and enter, and was sentenced to serve a 70-day jail term and complete a 12-month probation order.

No convictions were recorded.
