Beau Fermor has joined the likes of fellow Dalby Maroons legends Carl Webb and Andrew McCullough in becoming a Queeensland representative.

Tucked away in a Canberra hotel on Sunday night, the Gold Coast Titans second rower rang his family at 8pm to say Maroons coach Billy Slater had selected him for game one of this year’s State of Origin series. .

“It’s very, very exciting,” Fermor’s older brother Sam said.

“We got the news around 8pm when he made a group call to the family, probably not long after Billy (Slater) called him.

“It’s an amazing achievement for him. Something he’s worked hard for his entire career.

Growing up in Dalby, Sam fondly recalls a young Fermor “biting at the bit” and plenty of epic backyard battles.

“He was always biting at the bit to play footy. He just wanted to get out and play as soon as he could,” Sam said.

“There was lots of backyard footy between us and lots of fun.”

Sam, who lines in up the second row for Dalby Diehards, also recalls his brother’s determination and passion to succeed.

“Determination and hard work. That is what has got Beau to where he is now,” Sam said.

“I honestly don’t know anyone that works as hard as he has.

“Growing up he was never a standout player in his age group or Toowoomba and he never made rep teams.

“He always worked hard though, never gave up on the dream.

“Proof of that is what he has been through in his career - battling back from two reconstructions shows how determined he is.”
