From massive CBD expansions to mountain bike trails and more, these are the projects set to boost liveability and excitement in the region.
Miles CBD Streetscape
The recently completed Miles CBD Streetscape was part of the Covid-19 Recovery Package, which Western Downs Regional Council hopes will enhance liveability in the region.
The $6.4 million project constructed by Bellwether Contractors is set to transform the CBD into a vibrant, welcoming space which is expected to encourage people to slow down, stop, visit and stay longer.
The project involved the revitalisation of the main street to create a village feel, which is RV friendly, and includes lighting, outdoor dining opportunities, street tables and stools, colourful landscaping, improved pedestrian linkages and public art.
An event to celebrate the official opening will be held Saturday, July 2.
Russell Park Mountain Bike Trails
Developed using 50/50 funding from WDRC and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, Russell Park Mountain Bike Trails will include a new adrenaline experience for visitors.
There are approximately 28kms of mountain bike trails at the Bunya Mountains location that will cater for all riding abilities, with location options ranging from Munro’s Camp, Fisher’s Lookout and Russell Park.
Construction has already commenced for features such as enhanced picnic/seating areas, revitalised landscape, bike facilities and designated parking areas.
Specialist trail builders, Common Grounds Trails is contracted to construct the trails, while Boyds Bay Landscaping is set to complete the trailhead construction components of the project.
Significant rainfall has delayed the project, however it’s expected to be completed in late 2022.
120 Cunningham St Dalby

Co-funded by the council and the Queensland Government Works 4 Queensland Program, the project will feature outdoor digital screen for movies and digital art shows, main plaza for events, light show to activate space at night and spaces to encourage new local eateries and food trucks.
The design delivered by Blight Rayner will be constructed by New State Builders and is expected to take up to 12 months to complete.
New State Builders director Tony Carmichael said he was eager to get started as soon as possible.
Tara Pool Replacement Project
Construction for the Tara Pool Replacement Project, which is fully funded by WDRC and worth $7.9 million, is under way.
Some of the features include a new premier short course pool with eight lanes and a disability access ramp, heating, pool blankets and state-of-the-art filtration systems.
It will also have a new entry point and landscaped areas, a kiosk, amenities and community activation space, open communal spaces and barbecue areas, and relocatable tiered seating.
The replacement project is anticipated to be completed by the new 2022/23 swim season.
Dalby Cultural Precinct
WDRC have investigated options for the development of a cultural precinct in Dalby after the demolition of Myall 107.
The precinct development which will be considered with the community’s input will be suitable for future economic, community, tourism and cultural needs of the town.
As part of this process, the council will undertake a comprehensive community engagement exercise and commence preparation in the coming months.
The community engagement strategy is currently under development, and residents are encouraged to watch this space for further updates.
