Five things that shock tourists about Australia

Progress can begin on the anticipated Cunningham Street project, with a Dalby construction company chosen to transform the former Mary’s Commercial Hotel into a modern outdoor community space.

New State Builders will begin construction in June, and director Tony Carmichael said he was eager to begin work.

“Being local, we understand the importance of this block of land with the iconic Commercial Hotel and Mary Barry, and to have the opportunity to do something like this in your own community is always something to feel proud of,” he said.

Mayor Paul McVeigh said the project would boost liveability by offering a vibrant space for people to meet and could be used for community gatherings as it would host eateries and temporary food trucks.

“This project is about bringing a ‘wow’ factor to Cunningham Street to drive economic activity in Dalby’s CBD,” he said.

The redevelopment, which has been given $1.5 million from the Works for Queensland Program, is set not only to boost liveability but also pay homage to the beloved Mary Barry who owned the Commercial Hotel for 58 years.

Blighter Rayner’s architect, Michael Rayner led the design and took the opportunity to breathe life into the town’s heart by ensuring modern and vibrant features were included.

The outdoor area would include projector screens to present digital art and films and have a tribute to Mary Barry through a ‘front bar’ seating structure alongside her famous phrase, ‘Happy Days Luv’.

“The project will also include vibrant arbours, colourful lighting, carefully selected flowers, shrubs and trees to suit our climate, a range of seating, tables, water misting fans to cool the area down, and space for food trucks and market stalls,” Mr McVeigh said.

Mr Carmichael said he was excited to start as soon as possible on construction, which was expected to take 12 months.

“It’s a great opportunity for us as local people to showcase our skills,” he said.
