Opera at Jimbour has returned for its 20th year, and residents will have the opportunity to celebrate not one huge anniversary but two as they gather this weekend at the beloved estate.

The three-day event will be on from May 5-7, and allows residents and visitors to tour the historic building, as well as immerse themselves in live music.

This year will mark 20 years that Opera at Jimbour has been held at the beloved estate and is presented by QMF, Western Downs Regional Council and Opera Queensland.

Opera Queensland CEO and artistic director Patrick Nolan said they were committed to sharing the opera with regional audiences.

“QMF and Jimbour House over many years have been integral partners in this mission,” he said.

“We look forward to continuing this relationship in 2023 and collaborating with Ensemble Q to immerse audiences in a program of opera and fine music making in and around the majesty and beauty of this unique location.”

The iconic Jimbour House first launched the opera event in 2003 and has hosted internationally renowned performers like Deborah Humble, Sarah Macliver, Natalie Peluso and Bradley Daley.

Performing this year will be artists such as Daniel De Borah, Lotte Betts-Dean, Carlos Barcenas and Paul Dean as they premier an original composition Australian Song.

This weekend will also celebrate 100 years since the Jimbour House was purchased by the Russell family in 1923 and will include gala events on the Eastern Lawn, chamber music under the Hanger, recitals inside the opulent Drawing Room and exclusive tours through the halls of the house.

In 2021 University of Southern Queensland’s senior research fellow Dr Geoff Woolcock conducted a study to assess the social and cultural impact of festivals on regional communities such as Opera at Jimbour.

“There are so many different layers to what festivals and tourism can do for a small town and essentially this evaluation is assessing how cultural music performances can significantly contribute to regional revitalisation,” Dr Woolcock said.

Mayor Paul McVeigh said Opera at Jimbour provided a unique opportunity to showcase the region.

“The Western Downs is bursting with rich experiences that tell the story of who we are, and the fabulous region we choose to call home,” he said.

“We are delighted to see this world-class event return in 2023, and I look forward to celebrating all the great things on offer here on the Western Downs.”
