A 40-year veteran of the trade at one of Dalby’s most trusted auto shops has been named the region’s best mechanic by our readers. Meet the winner and see what sets them apart here:

With more than 40 years of experience under his belt, Gary Dunlop in a master of his trade and has gained a loyal following in the Western Downs region through honesty and integrity.

Now the Dalby-based mechanic has been voted in by Dalby Herald readers as the region’s best mechanic for 2022.

Mr Dunlop has owned Gary Dunlop Mechanical for more than two decades, opening his doors to customers 25 years ago.

“I’ve been a mechanic my whole life. Originally I worked for Mitsubishi in town. I was with them for about 16,” he said.

“When I left them I decided to go off on my own and it paid off.”

Mr Dunlop said that while the work was sometimes tough, he loved the challenges the job presented in the forever-evolving motor industry.

“There’s also a lot of different characters out there in the Dalby community, who make the job enjoyable,” he said.

Mr Dunlop said his winning formula was simple yet effective - remaining trustworthy and honest in an industry where those qualities could sometimes be hard to come by.

“The mechanical industry over the years has always had a bit of a bad name,” he said.

“There are a lot of rip-off merchants out there and I’ve certainly tried not to be one of them. I always thought I was going to change the industry.

“I guess that’s reflected in the votes, particularly in a community like Dalby. Once you’ve got a reputation here - whether it be good or bad - you’ve got it for life.”

Mr Dunlop’s passion for mechanics also extends outside the shed in the form of an old 1967 Mustang, which he said he has been tinkering with.

“They’ve always been a passion of mine, so when the opportunity came up to get one I jumped on it,” he said.

The proud business owner said he was in shock at winning the title of the region’s best mechanic and was incredibly thankful to those who voted for him.

“You never go into business for yourself to win awards, but he accolades are always good,” he said.

“I'd certainly like to thank all those who voted for me. It's a privilege to be to be even nominated, let alone win.”
