Internationally renowned Waanyi artist Judy Watson will display her newest exhibit in Miles next month examining the themes of terra nullius, colonial conflicts, and Aboriginal resistance.
Described as ‘affecting and accessible storytelling’, ‘skeletons’ will open at Dogwood Crossing and features a series of raw and unframed textile works, alongside videos from within Queensland’s archives.
The exhibition encourages viewers to reconsider their idea of Australia’s history and educate themselves on the experiences of First Nations peoples.
Community and Cultural Development spokesman councillor Peter Saxelby said the latest exhibition emphasised the importance of art in the regions.
“Our region boasts a diverse array of arts and cultural events, and I am delighted that community members will be able to experience Judy Watson’s powerful works, right here in the Western Downs,” he said.
“Exhibitions likes skeletons not only contribute to our vibrant community, but also help build cultural understanding and education.
“We’re proud to offer such world-class contemporary art experiences for our community, and I encourage all community members, or anyone thinking about paying a visit to Miles, to attend the opening or visit the exhibition.”
The exhibition will be displayed at Dogwood Crossing, Miles, from Friday, February 7, until March 29.
